the news & the fire this time by heather joi

I've never been a fan of the news. It's rare that you hear about good things. These days you can rely on social media to stay on top of what's going on in the world. However, it ends up having the same result, negativity abounds.

I'm afraid to turn on the news because I will cry for Baltimore like I cried for Ferguson and I don't feel like doing that. I would cry not because of the riots but because it is 2015 and Blacks in America still have to struggle for equal treatment under the law. It's unfathomable that these are the times we are living in. What of progress? What of evolution? Is our society a joke? How will we survive? How will we overcome? Will we survive this?

I along with many others wonder what it will take. How do we unify and once we do what are we asking for that we have not been asking for for centuries? What of reparations? What of giving our poorly resourced communities a fighting chance and not by "deconcentrating poverty" but by fighting poverty with the necessary resources to bring about real change once and for all.

Our society has been the project and creation of those who have always had the upperhand. Not of those once held as property but that's a topic for another day. Today it's the news and nothing good is on and there is no more water. However, I am an optimist and I believe that this is our chance to get it right and this time we must get it right because if we fail to do so we all will pay dearly no matter our color, no matter our creed. If we really want to live, now is the time.
